![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And the best part? It's only the first chapter of a trilogy! (And that's not spoiling anything, the game itself tells you it has sequels before you even begin.) So there's a lot more where this came from and the entire experience in playing all three chapters makes for a fun and frightening night alone. Combined with the expertly composed music and the moody visuals, and horror fans should surely get a kick out of it. It expertly gives you just enough narrative flow to get a grasp on what's happening, but also leaves most of the story vague, thus creating a great deal of suspense as you try to figure out what's going on. Beyond that, this is just one creepy game. For a relatively low-key indie game, be prepared to devote about an hour to your first play-through, which is an ideal amount of time for an online indie-game. It's what helps take the relatively short game (it can be played in about 10 minutes if you know what you're doing) and helps to expand it to a much longer and more enthralling process. While it does often fall back on the simple "Find key in one room and use in other room", there's just enough variation and detail work to make each discovery feel like an accomplishment, and a few of the puzzles can be head-scratchers for several minutes before the solution dawns on you. The puzzles in the game are well-balanced and just challenging enough to make both the casual and hardcore gamer feel clever for solving them. Especially when combined with the somewhat anachronistic sounding music, which has both a modern feel while seemingly also having an old-fashioned influence. It adds to the ominous sense of detachment and isolation because it feels so foreign. Yet, it's so enthralling and well-designed, the retro art-style actually works in its favor in a strange way that is almost indescribable. Visually, it is styled to resemble older-fashioned games with highly pixelated artwork and simplistic animations. However, you will soon learn that you are being pursued by mysterious dark figures with glowing white eyes, who will seemingly stop at nothing to get you! Aesthetically, the game is quite striking. Trapped in a mysterious building, you must navigate the various rooms and obstacles, seeking clues and finding various items to proceed further in an attempt to escape. The game is a simple one, played in a classic point-and-click style and revolving around a nameless protagonist who "awakens" inside of a nightmarish dream. A wonderful exercise in good, old- fashioned atmospheric horror and puzzle-solving, "Deep Sleep" is an independently released game created in 2012 and available free-to- play on several websites online. ![]() "Deep Sleep"- the first of a trilogy created by programmer Scriptwelder, is one such game. With the tools now available to programmers and storytellers, it's conceivable for a single person to create a masterful game that can captivate the masses and draw in adoring fans. And most certainly into the world of video gaming. This of course expands beyond the world of film as well. now, you can make something of just-as-high a quality with a $600 DSLR, a few lenses and some volunteer actors. Twenty years ago, you needed to raise $20,000 and find a full-fledged 16mm camera to make an indie movie people would even give a chance to. Never before have so many people been able to express themselves so creatively in increasingly affordable ways. We certainly live in a fascinating and exciting time thanks to the rise of the internet and the increased simplicity afforded to young artists. ![]()
